PRESS RELEASE:

MELED SALUTES PRISONERS OF ZION

Meled has incorporated a unique program of study for the 2008-9 school year. Our students will be learning about the struggle of other Jews to realize their dreams to live as free individuals in the State of Israel.

This program has already included Meled's participation at the National Ceremony for Prisoners of Zion in September at the Binyanei Hauma in Jerusalem. At this ceremony, Meled students created and distributed over 600 rose corsages to the former Prisoners of Zion as a sign of appreciation and respect for these heroic individuals.

The official defenition of Prisoners of Zion is any individual who was imprisoned/detained/exiled or put under house arrest for over half a year for zionist or jewish activities by a regime hostile to Israel.

Meled students greatly benefited from the opportunity to meet and interact with these brave individuals who were willing to pay a heavy price in order to fulfill a dream - to live as Jews in Israel.

Meled has chosen the topic of Prisoners of Zion as a yearly theme. Our students will be embarking on a special project that has yet to be done in Israel - the documentation of the life stories of the Prisoners of Zion.

Our students will be hosting at Meled 16 representatives of the 4 major groups of Prisoners of Zion: Eastern Europe, Arab Lands, Ethiopia and the Pre-Israeli Independence Palestinian Underground (Irgun, Etzel, Lechi). We are looking forward to learning much from the interaction with these historical figures.

The personal interviews of the Prisoners of Zion will be available for viewing on the Hebrew website that Meled students are developing: www.meled/asirayzion . The site is being constructed and edited by our students and should be operational within the coming weeks.

If you would like to participate in or contribute to this special project - please contact Eli Bialik: eli@meled.org.il
